Maximum Performance for EN45545: the new LATI promotions to the HL3 level

With the new European standard EN45545 in force as of 2013, the possibility of using plastic materials in the rail sector is evaluated through a study on flammability, toxicity, and optical density of fumes.

On the basis of these results, a risk index ("hazard level" or HL) is assigned, which can take values ranging from 1 to 3.

Maximum safety is indicated by HL3, this parameter ensures:

  • self-extinguishment of material according to the strictest limits imposed on the limit value of oxygen (LOI) and flame resistance;
  • low fume toxicity and opacity, which are critical factors in the case of escape from a confined environment where a fire has broken out.
LATI considers rail transport as a strategic sector for the future, and so it further focused on materials to be used for live electrical parts in rail vehicles.

The company is therefore pleased to announce the promotion to the maximum HL3 performance level of three self-extinguishing compounds that are already well known in other sectors:
  • LATAMID 66 H2 G/25-V0HF1: PA66, 25% glass fiber, self-extinguishing
  • LATAMID 6 H2 G/30-V0HF1: PA6, 30% glass fiber, self-extinguishing
  • LATAMID 6 H-V0: PA6, self-extinguishing
This is a particularly important result, because in all three cases a flame retardant, halogen and red phosphorus-free compound is proposed, fulfilling the strictest criteria of respect for the environment and human health.

Besides outstanding flame behavior, the three compounds also feature excellent processability and interesting mechanical and electrical properties.

All approved compounds feature very good thoughness and impact resistance, allowing interesting elongation values as well, all factors required for the development of those projects where some degree of flexibility is necessary.

These newly "promoted" grades add to the already HL3 rated LATI compounds, namely LATAMID 66 H2 G/25-V0CT4 (PA66, 25% glass fiber) and LARTON GCE/650 (PPS, 65% glass fiber and mineral filler mix).

So LATI’s proposal for the railway sector is strengthened for the replacement of both metal and expensive thermosetting and thermoplastic composites.
