Radiopaque
materials
These consist of a range of thermoplastic compounds
for injection-moulding whose opacity to X-rays
is more than sufficient to guarantee shielding
comparable to that of metals; it is possible to
optimize the shielding efficiency and contrast
by selecting the type of charge and opportunely
dosing the concentration.
Advantages:
The property of blocking X-rays generally proves
to be more effective the higher the density
of the apparatus they pass through. For this
reason, lead is used extensively in the realization
of all shielding apparatus both in medicine
and in the industrial sector.
In addition, metals and special ceramics are
used to produce features that must be detected
using X-ray analysis techniques. The problems
connected to the materials in question, are
however considerable:
from the disposal due to the toxicity inherent
to heavy metals, to the high cost of products
visibile to X-rays, often realized in limited
series through dedicated machining.
With LATIGRAY products considerable efficiency
can be attained regarding thickness similar
to those of equivalent metal features, without
overdimensioning or modifications to the design
of the products.
Radiopaque compounds can be coloured and optimized
in order to offer mechanical and thermal features
of great interest.
