Optical density of smoke (ASTM E 662 - room NBS)

DESCRIPTION OF TEST METHOD
The test is carried out in a constant-condition fume cupboard by introducing the material on a suitable sample dish and heating from beneath with a small electric furnace (smouldering conditions) or with the same furnace together with a small ignition flame (flaming conditions). The small furnace is set so that the sample receives 2.5 W/cm2 thermal energy. The light transmission through the smoke, resulting from the burning or combustion of the sample, is detected by a photocell which senses a vertical beam of light passing trough the smoke. The amount of light transmission passed during the test is expressed as the specific optical density value.
